Ahhh…..CROW (Cheap, Red Organic Wine)….one of my favorite drinks. And now Trader Joe’s has brought the goodness to market. Kim and I have been shopping there for a good many years and it’s always hit or miss with the organic wine in general. They always tend to have Bonterra in stock for a good price, but our local store has been shy of what we really want. Commenting on it each time seems to have helped. This trip we found two organic red wines besides Bonterra and boy were they cheap!
The Trader Joe’s wine is a Syrah and I opened our first bottle last night to try a sip. At $4.99/bottle I took a chance and bought three bottles. This isn’t your normal ‘put it in a cellar and enjoy later’ type of wine. Although it does need to breath a fair amount, the wine is drinkable now. It’s a little too tart when first opened but will soon mellow to be a fairly husky syrah with not as much complexity as you might expect. And yet, it’s yummy. Very yummy.
The other bottle we bought was a dollar more and when I get around to having a drink of that, I’ll let you know if it’s worth it as well. For $5, the Trader Joe’s Syrah is well worth the cost. Unfortunately you can never quite know when or where it’ll be in stock, so crab a case when you can. The more demand placed on organic products the more they’ll continue to produce, which we think is a good thing.
